In Loving Memory

Rahim "V Knuckles" Rashid Muhammad was a man who could not be defined by one title. He was a son, a father, a brother, a cousin, an uncle, a friend, an athlete, an entrepreneur, a competitor, an artist, a lyricist, a storyteller, and to countless people around the world, he was V Knuckles, one half of the internationally respected hip-hop duo N.B.S. (Natural Born Spitters).

But to the people who loved him most, he was simply Rahim, and to many who were fortunate enough to know him personally, he was Uncle Knuckles, Nux or just Knuckles.

Rahim was born on April 7, 1979, to Paula Coar and the late Yusuf Muhammad. His journey began in Roxbury, Massachusetts, where his introduction to music and culture started at Paige Academy through African drumming and dance. That early exposure to rhythm, movement, culture, and expression would become an important foundation for the artist he would eventually become.

From Paige Academy, Rahim attended Tobin Elementary School in West Cambridge, developing the competitive spirit that would follow him throughout his life. Rahim was not only an artist, he was an athlete.

At Concord Academy, he became a standout basketball player. Basketball was a lifelong love and another place where Rahim's personality came alive. He was competitive, confident, fearless, and never afraid of the moment. Later in life, he continued playing in men's leagues, where he helped teams compete for and win championships.

After Concord Academy, Rahim continued his education at Howard University, where he majored in Business. His years at Howard became another defining chapter in his life. It was there that he developed lifelong friendships, expanded his world, and continued pursuing his love of hip-hop. He entered rap battles and contests, sharpening his skills and establishing himself as an MC who could hold his own anywhere.

After graduating from Howard, Rahim returned home to Massachusetts, where he and his cousin Imam "Flash" Bilal-Firmin continued building what would become one of the most important independent hip-hop stories to come out of Boston and Cambridge. Together, they formed N.B.S., Natural Born Spitters. They earned their place through longevity, independence, consistency and lyricism.

His music continued to evolve throughout his life. In 2023, V Knuckles released the next chapter with producer Phoniks, a deeply personal project reflecting a new chapter in his life, including family, fatherhood and love.

Rahim's life also entered one of its most meaningful chapters when he became a father. His son, Kaimani Rahim Piccarreto Firmin, became an important part of his world, and his fiance, Kayla Ann Piccarreto, stood beside him as he embraced family and fatherhood.

Not simply that he was here, but he made his presence felt. Rahim was one of a kind. There will never be another Knuckles. Rest with the ancestors, Rahim, rest with the ancestors, Knuckles. Your voice will continue to travel, your words will continue to live, your music will continue to play, your stories will continue to be told, and your family will continue to carry you forward.

Forever Rahim. Forever Knuckles. Forever In Our Hearts.

History

N.B.S. (an acronym for Natural Born Spitters) is an American hip hop duo based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The group consists of cousins E'Flash (Imam Bilal-Firmin) and V-Knuckles (Rahim Muhammad). Known for their East Coast hip hop sound, N.B.S. has established an international following in Europe and Asia through self-funded tours and collaborations with international producers, including Germany's Snowgoons, Hungary's Scarcity Budapest, and Switzerland's Empire Music.

Formation and early life (1990s–2003)

While closely associated with Cambridge, both E'Flash and V-Knuckles originally hail from the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston. Rahim and his folks left the Madison Park Village townhomes to resettle in "The Coast" neighborhood of Cambridge (also known as Riverside) in the '90s. There, between a culturally thriving Central Square and Memorial Drive, he found a community that would nurture and shape him. For Rahim, an understanding of rhythm began early at Roxbury's Paige Academy through traditional African drumming and dance. When he attended Concord Academy, that rhythmic foundation met a fierce competitive streak on the basketball court. He was a standout athlete—fearless and never afraid of the moment—traits that would seamlessly translate to his energetic microphone presence.

The duo subsequently attended historically Black colleges. While E'Flash studied at Morris Brown College in Atlanta, V-Knuckles headed to Howard University in Washington, D.C. Howard became a crucible for Rahim; he dove headfirst into local rap battles and showcases, sharpening his pen and establishing himself as an MC who could hold his own in any cipher. During this time, performing under the moniker Rah Vital, he began distributing music through early internet platforms such as MP3.com, catching the ears of listeners as far away as Japan.

Debut and mixtape era (2003–2009)

In 2003, N.B.S. established their own imprint, NBS Entertainment, and released their debut studio album, In Due Time. The project was recorded at Cybersound in Boston with production from J. Cardim, Z. Johnson, and G. Smiley, firmly establishing the duo within the Boston underground scene before going out of print for over a decade.

Throughout the mid-to-late 2000s, N.B.S. became a regular fixture on the Boston live music circuit, performing at showcases like the Boston Hip Hop Unity Fest. They maintained momentum by releasing a series of mixtapes, including Green Heist Vol. 1 & 2 and Straight Piff 1.5, and gained recognition in 2007 with a feature on producer 9th Wonder's album The Dream Merchant Vol. 2, appearing alongside Sean Price and Royce da 5'9".

It was during this period that the group formed their core grassroots team. N.B.S. first connected with local producer Brian Shirley (also known as Neo or DJ Liphted) after spotting him rapping along to their lyrics in the crowd at the Western Front club in Cambridge. He began assisting the group pro bono, eventually producing their 2007 compilation mixtape, Evolution (The End Of The Beginning).

The duo also utilized their music for local social commentary. In 2009, they received press coverage for a track addressing the controversial arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. by Cambridge police, an event that sparked a national conversation on racial profiling.

Industry debut and international breakthrough (2010–2014)

Although they had a firm footing in the New England rap scene, N.B.S. sought to expand their audience globally. They partnered with Big Bang Records, an independent label founded by fellow Cambridge rapper Virtuoso (Miguel Blackmer-Hart), whom they had known since high school.

By combining forces, they released The Prelude in 2010, marketed as their official industry debut. Backed by dedicated label management handling digital marketing, distribution, and booking, the group developed an export strategy that successfully secured independent tours across Europe.

In 2012, they released The Dispensary, featuring the single "Our Time" with Outerspace. The release performed well in the Asian market, earning physical distribution in Japan through retailers like Disk Union. Their 2013 follow-up, The Smokefest, secured distribution through Traffic Entertainment Group.

Following this, N.B.S. focused heavily on international collaborations. In 2014, they released Budavets, a full-length collaboration with the Hungarian production crew Scarcity Budapest, and SwissVets: Hot Dogs to Swiss Francs, produced entirely by Swiss beatmakers Jakebeatz and DJ Tray. They also expanded their touring footprint to Asia, headlining the 2015 "Lawalah Vets Tour" in Malaysia alongside the local collective Lawalah Familia.

Collaboration with Snowgoons and recent work (2015–present)

In 2015, N.B.S. formed a collaborative partnership with the German production team Snowgoons for the joint album Trapped in America. The politically charged release captured the stymied disillusionment of the Obama twilight years, while the 2020 sequel, Still Trapped in America, sorted through the rubble of Donald Trump’s first term. Praised as some of the group's most staggering output, they are widely considered two of the best Massachusetts hip-hop LPs of all time. The physical CD release included a remastered version of their 2003 debut, In Due Time, as a bonus disc.

During the 2020 nationwide protests regarding systemic racism and police brutality, they reconnected with their Hungarian collaborators to release the Lost in Budapest LP.

Both members eventually explored solo endeavors. E'Flash teamed up with producer Bluntz in 2023 for the Bluntz With Flash EP. In October 2023, V-Knuckles released his solo LP, The Next Chapter. Produced by Phoniks and featuring heavyweights like Inspectah Deck and Fredro Starr, the album was more than just a showcase of lyrical prowess. It was a deeply personal reflection on a new era of his life, embracing his fiancé Kayla, the birth of their son Kaimani, and a mature perspective on fatherhood and legacy.

Musical style and influences

N.B.S. is deeply rooted in East Coast hip hop. In an industry of narcissists compelled to hog the mic, N.B.S. consistently exemplified creative selflessness toward a common goal. Their dynamic relies on the vocal contrast between E'Flash's calm, smooth whistle and V-Knuckles' signature sandpaper vocals. Finishing each other’s rhymes and tag-teaming tough East Coast beats, together they forged a single magnificent rap instrument. E'Flash cites Boston pioneers like Ed O.G., Guru, and R.S.O. as his primary influences, while V-Knuckles draws inspiration from legends like Kool G Rap and Nas.

Tragedy and Enduring Legacy (2026–Present)

In May 2025, Rahim was involved in a serious car crash on his way to the grand opening of a local dispensary he had helped license. During his treatment at Massachusetts General Hospital, doctors made a devastating discovery: a brain tumor. He bravely documented this reality on his wrenching September 2025 single, "MRI".

Nearly one year to the day after dropping that single, the N.B.S. story took a tragic turn on September 24, 2026, with the passing of V-Knuckles at the age of 47. His loss sent shockwaves through the New England hip-hop community and the duo's international fanbase, prompting an outpouring of grief and touching stories from friends and collaborators worldwide. Knuckles was a man who couldn't be defined by a single title—he was an entrepreneur, an athlete, a lyricist, and a devoted father.

While the physical journey of the duo ended that September, the culture they built remains permanent. E'Flash, their lifelong grassroots team, and fans around the world continue to carry the torch, ensuring that the stories, the energy, and the name V-Knuckles live on forever.
